Has anyone sought treatment at the Drake Institute in Southern California? They use non-drug neurofeedback therapy to relieve the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. If so, what was your experience like?
Re: Drake Institute
I also wanted to go the drug-free route for my nine year old son. He had his initial evaluation, first treatment and actually enjoyed the visit. The only downfall was that we didn’t/don’t have the money for the 30+ treatments, brain-mapping and other fees for further testing to rule out any other learning disabilities, which they want up front. We didn’t qualify for a loan and they don’t accept “pay as you go” payments. It’s unfortunate that my son couldn’t continue the treatments. On a positive note, I purchased a PC game “Journey to Wild Divine - The Passage” BioFeedback PC game. It was affordable and both my sons enjoy it and have learned to relax and focus. My husband and I also benefit from it as well.
I truly agree that this alternative treatment method is wonderful for those who can implement what they’ve learned and apply it to work and play.
My experience with Drake has been very good. We have a son who is now 22 years old with ADHD and went to Drake for a nine month period when he was 14. He was diagnosed with ADHD and we made the decision to try Drake before going the drug route. He was a barely passing student and in a period of 12 months became a B student with an occassional A. His concentration and ability to focus went from 20-30 seconds to over twenty minutes in that period of time and he improved his behavior significantly. He has never had to use Ritalin or the other drugs.
The behavioral modification in addition to the nueral training and family counseling is essential to success in my view. I wish we had started both earlier. My son has a near genius level IQ and had developed significant coping skills to mask the ADHD which Drake also helped to expose and correct. I’ve recommended Drake to a number of other parents and would not hesitate to do so again. To us it was a program with measurable positive results.
