getting SPED records?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Just wondering what kind of records SPED facilitators are required to keep on individual children? We cannot get a straight answer from them. When we asked at a meeting “can you walk us through a typical day with our son?” we got the blank stares, stuttering and stumbling and then the subject was changed. The curriculum director says that it is a legitimate question and we deserve an answer. I want to know what I am talking about when I go back at her. These people are the masters of avoidance. So, what records are they required to keep and what am I looking for?

Having subbed as a special ed aide I can tell you
that they should have an answer for you from
my experience.

I always get a lesson plan - usually very, very sketchy,
and in the aides’ shorthand,
but it tells me that there is a plan for every day. And the kids
always let me know what they supposed to do and how
Mrs. X does it this way instead of that way ;-)

I might be giving a spelling test, playing a math game,
reading through a certain book. Some kids are scheduled
to be tested on a unit. They will have their own packets
of dolche words and words they are supposed to write
in a sentence.

(I have yet to work with anyone on phonics!)

Someone sets these lesson plans and decides who
is doing what. I expect it is the sped teacher.
I was surprised to realize that aides were teaching
my child. No degree, some training.
Many of them, interested and intelligent, make
excellent teachers. Others do not.

Why don’t you go to the school and visit his class or spend the day?? That way you can see first hand how the school works?
