Help! PPT/IDEA?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am preparing for my son’s PPT regarding his IEP for middle school. He has an language impairment for which he receives services. My question is: Is he covered under IDEA because he is language impaired and receiving services, but not LD or recieving special SPED? Any help to clarify this would be appreciated.

Yes, of course he is. He can receive whatever services he requires regardless of the label he is eligible under. Why do you ask?

I asked because when I read IDEA, it sounded as though you were only covered by it if you were receiving special services, such as language with a SLP, AND SPED, NOT just language services. My son only receives language services althoug we also have an auditory memory deficit documented too. At his PPT, I would like to add a Parent Attatchment because I noticed on his last IEP a request we had made was left out. He has a wonderful teacher this year, so she did follow our request and found it very helpful in the classroom.

I have had communication issues with the middle school this year already with my daughter who has no learning difficulties. Needless to say, I am anxious what next year will bring and want to cover as many bases as possible in his IEP for next as I can.

Tahnk you.

Socks is right- if he is on an IEP, the nature of his eligibility does not affect services. If he is eligible as a student with a language impairment and needs direct instrction in reading for example, then he is entitled to it.
