Help with toy clutter

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Toy clutter is out of control at our house. My 9 year old ADHD child loves little figures and creates elaborate stories with them. Our family room floor is littered to the point where we cannot walk. He seems incapable of cleaning up and walks around in circles not knowing what to do. I have to literally stand over him and point out each item and tell him where to put it. We’ve tried various types of containers, but they are always overflowing. Any ideas?

: This post is so familiar - verbatim from another some time ago. I hope that mother posts the solution she arrived at.If the containers are overflowing, he has no place to put the many things on the floor perhaps. Maybe the rule that he can have one thing out at a time. That has to go back before he brings out the next set of figures. And certaily no buying no new figures or allowing him to accept gifts from others until he puts what he has away.Toy clutter is out of control at our house. THIS SOUNDS VERY FAMILIAR! What we do to help control clutter is once every other month or so I give each of my kids a garbage bag and they fill it up themselves with toys for the “needy children”. ( They are age 7 and 4).
This has become quite a fun event and they are surprisingly un-selfish. The only problem is when they pick out sentimental items that I want to hang on to! They even enjoy taking the toys to a local shelter where abused women go with their children and that way they can meet and even play with some of the children. We especially like to fill extra bags at Christmas so Santa will have room for theur new stuff! hope this helps! Jan
