How do I know if 12 Yr. Old has LD?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi, I am a newbi. I have a 12 year old girl who I feel has a LD. We had her tested in Grade 5 for ADHD because our 9 year old son has ADHD. The Learning Difficulties Screening Summary is as follows:

Peabody Picture Voc. Test - 77 percentile-high avg.
Letter-Word Ident. - 51 percentile-avg.
Word Attack - 73 percentile - avg.
Auditory Working Memory - 52 percentile-avg.
Spatial Relations - 75 percentile-avg.
Applied Problems - 82 percentile-high avg.

They also did two separate rating systems for ADHD.

Together they found that the results were inconclusive.

The teachers felt we expected to much of her and that she would “grow” into her academics. She is starting grade 7 now and I don’t feel she is any better with her grammar and organization.

Her big problems are writing and grammar(messy, doesn’t use punctuation, captialization, spacing, unable to edit) and very poor organization at home and school. In addition she has no friends. She is very verbal, interrupts all the time, doesn’t take cues of body language, says socially inappropriate things, wants to be centre of attention, very argumentative and dramatic. I could go on and on.

I am just sick about her missing out on her teen years. She spent the summer completely alone without a single phone call or friend. She is not shy and will go up to anyone and make friends but she seems to be too much for them and that pushes them away. I have been trying to check all the different LD to see what she might have if anything and some see to fit but then there are always characteristics she doesn’t have.

I have a meeting with our case worker who tested her before in a couple weeks and I was looking for maybe some info to go into the meeting with or suggestions for areas to look further into.

I would suggest thorough testing across all domains as well as a psychiatric profile. This will give you much more information about LDs and any other issues going on.

http://www.brainsource.com/domains.htm - this is a list of all functional domains that should be tested.

Often times when testing is too pin-pointed, it misses things that are causing problems. Getting testing done in ALL areas will make sure that nothing is left out.

I agree get her thoroughly tested. Talk to her pediatrician, he/she should know good testing resources in your area. She sounds just like my son who has a problem with the synapses firing in synch.

I am a newbie. I am currently fighting with the school to get my son, a seventh grader, tested for disgraphia and discalcula. Duker-Dee’s daughter sounds exactly like my son, problems with writing and grammer, organization, and social difficulties. I have started looking into other avenues of help. How do you get tested for the synapses problem? Who does this? Do I need to have my doctor do tests first before taking him on to a specialist?
