I wonder if it was something I did...

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I was using cocaine when I got pregnant with my son. Not a lot, I was on vacation in Jamaica at the time, but I still wonder if somehow that had an affect on him.
Has there been any studies done that link previous drug use with ADHD in children? Both my husband I were “sixties” children when drug use wasn’t seen as bad. But now I wonder if my son is suffering the consequences.

Nope, no research on that. And… is that something you can control now? Change? Learn from it — even *if* (and it’s a big if — there are an awful lot of ADHD kids whose parents didn’t use anything) that did something, don’t let it do further harm by hurting you further.

There are some connections between drug use while pregnant and resulting learning differences in children. But it’s also true that ADD/ ADHD can occur in a child where there was no history of prenatal drug exposure.

I too was a child of the 60s but didn’t do drugs. But my son also has ADD/ADHD.

We always wonder what could have been different but it can be just as helpful to try to make the future different than to worry about the past.

Good luck.

I never did drugs either as a teenager or as an adult and both my 8 and 11 have ADD. It is also an inherited disorder and I have wathced and evaluated my children al along know that thier father, Grandfather and Uncle all have varying degrees of ADD. Your best defense now is to gather as much understanding about ADD as you can and be your child’s best advocate and teacher. Also, let go of any guilt you may be feeling. Forget what you did and move forward. Be proactive for your child’s sake and education. My best to you as you struggle to help your child.
