PARTICIPANTS REQUIRED FOR UNIVERSITY STUDY
Seeking parents of children with a ‘primary’ diagnosis of either an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (Asperger’s Syndrome, ASD, PDD-NOS etc.) or an Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD).
Emotional Reactivity Study
This research project is part of the course requirements for Developmental Psychology at Central Queensland University. The aim of the study is to compare levels of trait arousability or emotional response in children who have a primary diagnosis of an Autistic Spectrum Disorder or an Attention Deficit Disorder. High emotional reaction can occur when a child is faced with complex, changing, novel or unexpected situations. Usually, as time passes, and the individual is used to the change in circumstances, levels of emotional response drop back to normal levels. Some children however take longer to return to this baseline, and high emotional reactions (both positive and negative) may be maintained for an extended period.
While Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Attention Deficit Disorders each have defining criteria as specified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), high emotional reactivity has been observed in both groups. This research will determine if there are any significant differences between the two groups and may have implications for anxiety management strategies for such children.
Participation in this study is entirely voluntary, and you are free to withdraw at any time. All data collected in this study is strictly confidential and no identifying information will be used in the findings. The survey is a parent report of your child’s emotional responses (eg. ‘Sometimes my child gets emotionally moved over even simple things’). There are 46 questions and it will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. This is a simple survey which can be filled out and submitted by email.
