Poor Language Development - Suggestions on Therapies Needed

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

[color=orange] :) My daughter has trouble organizing her thoughts when speaking, as well as, finding the right words. She has greatdifficulty expressing her self verbally. She also has memory problems. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what therapies I should check out that might be helpful?
Thank you!

My son is very similar (and dyslexic). The way I’ve dealt with this is I constantly ask him questions (to force him to talk). Also, when he can’t come up with a word I tell him to imagine what he’s trying to say, what’s the color? how big is it? what’s another word you might be able to use for it? My personal feeling is that kids with word retrieval difficultes need to be fed a huge vocabulary so that they can choose similar words when they can’t think of a particular one. With verbal organization I try to work with my son on things like who/what/when/where. I like to use a socratic method of asking him questions that will force him to figure the whole thing out on his own. One good book I came across is Lanuguage Wise by McGuinness (the author of Phonographix). You can find it at many book stores. I believe it’s less than $20, or even borrow it from some public libraries (I know my library had it).

In addition to working with your child at home (and in the car! We’ve done a lot of these verbal games while traveling in the car), request that your school do a speech and language assessment if it hasn’t already been done. Your child may be eligable for services through the school.
