We are using resperdol with our 7yo AS, ADHD, SI to combat the “voices” he has been hearing……..Great SIDE affect is that he is sleeping wonderfully!!!!!!! Hope this helps.

Risperdol is an anti-psychotic drug. I certainly would wonder if there wasn’t something else that could be used for sleep problems.

Risperdal can have very negative side effects if not used properly. One thing is that it is physically habit forming, and any dosing of it needs to be done in a uniform manner, not intermittantly. Once you begin using risperdal, you cannot just stop without the very real possibility of inducing tardive dyskinesia.

I would be extremely surprised if any dr. would prescribe this type of medication for insomnia.

A very low dosage 0.25 mg of Risperidone (Risperdal) helped our 10 yr old daughter sleep. However, she suffered from severe muscle and joint pain so meds were stopped after 2 weeks.

The primary function of this med is as an antipsychotic. In children it is used to combat mood disorders, autism, aggressive behaviors, depression, PDD, hearing voices and schizophrenia.

This drug was intended for use on adults in 1993 then eased into the pediatric community.

In April 2003, Johnson & Johnson sent warning letters to U.S. physicians citing the drug’s link to an elevated risk of stroke in elderly patients.
