Significant Language & Speech Impairment - Lost

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son who is 8 has been diagnosed after testing as having a significant language and speech impairment. Quick background, didn’t talk till almost 4. Did birth to 3 program and special 3 year old program. Has been in a normal classroom with speech 2x a week. He can read and spell pretty good but can recall very little of what he read. He can follow only simple instructions and gets lost easy with too much info. His teachers have been so wonderful so far. I am worried that as he gets older that teachers wont be so nice. I am feeling overwhelmed right now and don’t know where to go from here. I could really use some guidance. Websites to go to, programs that work well, books, anything to get me started. There is just so much info out there and I am feeling lost. Please help. Thank you for any info.

Hi Lori,

I would highly recommend Apraxia Kids, which has a wide range of very helpful information.
Though they also have a very active list serve discussion, where you can get plenty of helpful advice, from parents and therapists.
Here’s a link to it:

To join the discussion there, click on Stay Connected, and then Apraxia Kids Email List Serve. To join in the discussion.
