Signing IEP

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

What should I do if I am not ready to sign the IEP? We still have unresolved issues and we are waiting to hear from an ouside source. My 30 days is almost up.

they have to implement the old IEP and write a letter to the sped director
stating why you’re not signing it, if they won’t help, check off refused and get an I eval at their expense.

They can actually implement the IEP without your signature. You are the parent. You are an equal member of the IEP team. This means that the “team” decides the educational placement, the content of the IEP. Your signature is for what? Is the school purposing that you have 3o days to either sign the IEP or what? I guess there isn’t enough information here. What are the unresloved issues? If it’s awaiting test results,or any relationship to your child’s educational future, information that would change his IEP,then the school has to allow you to meet and present this new information. I would send a letter, registered reciept, tell them you remain awaiting information that might change your son’s IEP,therefore as soon as you recieve it,you will et them know and a new IEP meeting could be scheduled. The BIG thing, this is a TEAM,all members coming together and discussing things. I would keep to this point, but they can over ride you,and implement the IEP. If you feel strongly enough about not implementing, you could request mediation hearing, they would then have to not do anything until you go to mediation.
