sleep & dyslexia

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son who is now 16 has always been a big napper. He seems to need power naps after school. I am wondering if this has anything to do with his LD?

Has he been tested for sleep apnea? While he could be sleeping, it may not be a “good, healthy” type of sleep.

Yes, the sleep issue most definitely can be part of the LD. Children with dyslexia often times must use extreme concentration to read, write, and do mathematical formulas, and this intense concentration can wipe them out. In addition, LD kids in general have a harder time holding it together at school—behaving, sitting still, concentrating, and even socializing. This extra effort also can make them very tired. Last, it is the end of the school year, and this often is the most difficult time of the year for the LD kid. By this time of year, they are done.

So, I wouldn’t worry about your son’s sleeping. If he continues sleeping too much after school’s ended, then you might want to have it checked out.
