I was wondering if their were any opinions on using Sylvan Learning Center vs hiring a home tutor. My child was tested there and I went for the conference this evening. It is very expensive for the amount of time my child needs and I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on one vs the other.
Re: tutoring vs Sylvan learning centers
Sylvan provides a ready ‘stable’ of tutors for parents who can’t find tutors in any other way. You pay for the convenience of them having found tutors for you rather like the price you pay at convenience stores. Everything costs more but it’s easy to find. The quality isn’t higher, it’s just convenient.
If you ask around or know of other tutors, I wouldn’t hesitate to not use Sylvan. I much prefer the kind of relationship that a family can establish with a home tutor. Good tutors can be found anywhere - if you have time to look for them.
We tried Sylvan one summer when one of my other children
was very ill and I couldn’t do it all.
$800!!!
While I’m not sure that they could specifically deal with
his dyslexia, it was an okay alternative when we really
needed one.
I think a private tutor, who knows how to work
with your child’s specific problems is a good investment,
especially if the child and parent clash over school work.
