What book to buy on SPED?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi. Looking to purchase a book that is a comprehensive guide to special ed. I see for example one person recommended “From Emotions to Advocacy: The Special Education Survival Guide” by Peter Wright.

Could anyone else recommend a book that they know of (or just agree about the one by Peter Wright) that is thorough, yet “easy” to read?

Thanks.

Hi, Judy.

I’m the person who recommended the Wright book.

I stand by that recommendation but need to add that the book is very general. It covers how to organize your records, how to write letters that get results, who the gatekeeppers of service are, warning signs, ect.

It does not cover specifics. It does not have (or I haven’t found yet) specific recommendations for IEPs for Dyslexics, EBDer, or other groups. It doesn’t offer ideas for specific accomendations for the different groups. It’s a great FIRST book.

It is super easy to read and understand. It reads very much like one of the “Dummy” series, only without the humor.

Hope this helps and I’m looking forward to what others suggest.

If you are looking for particulars and details about LDs and how learning and the mind works, I love “A Mind At a Time” by Mel Levine (www.allkindsofminds.org) or any book store has it.

Tons of VALUABLE information. A must have, in my opinion.

Just a forewarning–for those of us who have children on the autistic spectrum—esp with Aspergers’, Levine’s book does not acknowledge that these disorders exist—many people with kids with AS are not happy with his work for this reason. there is lots of valuable information in there, BUT—he is not the total answer for all of us—though my school district seems to think so….sigh…
