??? What is the Vineland adaptive Behavior Scale

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m looking for some wisdom here.. What does this test measure and what does it determine? My daughter had a composite of 78. This placed her in the
7 percentile. This test was not really mentioned durring the eligilibity meeting.
Should this be considered in determining eligilibity? This was the classroom edition done by her teacher. Comments were as follows.

She appeared to have difficulties in the area of communication, especially in the area of written communication, and also seemed to have difficulty in overall daily living skills. These scores are certainly not commensurate with her intellectual abilities, nor are they commensurate with her academic abilities.

I am not too familiar with this assessment but I am sure that someone on this board will be.

Try these two websites, they both have info:

The Vineland is a measure of Adaptive Behavior and is generally done in conjunction with an evaluation for a learning impairment because there have to be concurrent Adaptive Behavior Deficits for eligibility. There is a parent interview that should be done also- because . I cannot imagine why anyone would do the this in conjunction with an LD eval. It generally just isn’t an issue on the table. My first question therefore would be why it was done. My second would be why the parent form was not done along with. Then we could discuss how the results fit in…

Eligibility for special ed.? How is she classified now? The Vineland measures communication, daily living, socialization and motor skills and is often used for students with global dev. delays, autism, and mental retardation. If your child has delays in areas other than language-based learning academics(LD), maybe the school was trying to document need for another federal category of disability. Ask them.

My daughter is not classified at all. She will be going into the 4th grade and will be 9 in August. She has been struggling since the 1st grade. I wanted to have her tested then and should have, but listened to the principle who said she is young , its just developmental. We have done three years of intervention with reading resource at her private school, and tutoring for two years. This past school year we began the testing process in December. Her teacher took the attitude that my daughter just didn’t try, because at times she can do the work and does. She didn’t come right out and say Lazy but it’s the basic idea.
Testing that was done, WISC III, Woodcock-Johnson III, Social Developmental History, Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale, Classroom Observations, Clinical Interview, Referral Information, Teacher Consultation.
Verbal IQ— 105 Performance IQ—112
Math and reading were a second grade level one year behind. Math fluency at a 1.4 grade level.
She was diagnosed ADHD after testing by her dr. , and a Speech and Language Evaluation diagnosed minor articulation disorder, and moderate learning disabilities (i.e. dyslexia). ( this testing was done privately ) She also has a Hypothyroid condition.
Her Terra Nova CAT scores also just came back . Her total score consisting of reading , language and math was 13%. She had 6 scores in the normal range and 8 below normal.
She was accepted for a summer program at a LD school starting later this month. The county keeps saying she doesn’t qualify for any special education, and the ARC meeting scheduled for the end of school year to discuss OHI was cancelled, because county said they didn’t get Dr’s written report ahead of time. Now they are telling me we have to wait until the school year begins next year. This has been such a frustrating experience !
I’m not sure if this information helps any more or not.. but thanks for your help.
