My 8-year-old child apparently bombed the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. I guess you are suppose to make sets of ten. He was not able to make one set of ten. What does this mean? I’ve been reading about it on the net, and it makes it seem like my child has no executive function. Does anybody know about this test and what it means?

I guess I always felt executive functioning was not his strong point, but I thought his weaknesses were not that great. I guess it was the severity that the test indicated that surprised me. The neuropysch didn’t really do any other tests that specifically targeted EF. However, the neuropsych said my son’s verbal conceptual ability was a great strength.
You are right, the WCST is used as a measure of “executive function” but you should remember that it is only one test and as with any one test it is a “snapshot in time”— no one test should be used to make a diagnosis or treatment plan. The tester should be able to use these results in combination with other tests and observations of how your child handles “real world” executive functions. Do these results confirm what you see as his struggles with schoolwork?
