worried about school tests

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My daughter is ten and in the fourth grade. She has been diagnosed with ADD since first grade and tends to run behind in school but with my help has been able to keep up with her class. However in the last year, her teachers and I have been worried about when she hits middle school. Teachers don’t tend to be able to deal with special cases in the higher grades and I’m worried that she won’t be able to handle “in class” things like tests etc. Has anyone found a technique or training excercise that helps ADD kids do well on tests in class. My daughter is smart and knows the material but usually needs extra time on tests and I don’t think that they will allow extra time in the higher grades. Any thoughts you have or good books you know of on the subject would be appreciated.

My son is in the 6th grade and is on an IEP, he is allowed extra time on tests or untimed tests and is also allowed to retake tests for grade improvement. I believe these are also accommodations that can be recieved from a 504 plan if your daughter is not on an IEP. I know there are others here on the bb who know lots more about this. I also was concerned about middle school but my son is actually getting a lot more attention in each class than before. However all schools and admins are different so I may just be lucky. Best wishes, hope this helped.: My daughter is ten and in the fourth grade. She has been diagnosed

PASSWORD>aaypjoGdHk2QkYour daughter is definitely entitled to extended time on tests with a 504 plan (or an IEP) if it is written into the plan. It doesn’t matter what grade she is in or what state you live in. Another accommodation you might ask for is having her tests taken in a separate location with less distractions. Many middle schools and high schools offer courses in organization and study skills. If yours doesn’t, the resource room teacher would be able to give you some of the techniques that are taught.: My daughter is ten and in the fourth grade. She has been diagnosed
