ZAGATs for LD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello,

Growing up dyslexic, I now hope to publish a directory of LD resources for Moms of LD kids. It is like “ZAGATs for LD” – with ratings and comments from Moms. Here’s an example:

| ABC Tutoring Center {**** }
| 1 Main Street 212-555-1212
|
| Moms say “… a great place to take
| your child … familiar with a number
| of methods … very attentive tutors
| … they really understood my issues
| and treated us well … somewhat
| expensive … try to get Mary Q.”
|
| Price {*** } Location {*****}
| Effective {** } Professional {* }
| Follow-up {*****} Materials {*** }

But I need help picking which categories of products and services to include: Tutor centers, like this example? Books? Conferences? Teaching methods? What else?

And for each of these different categories, I need help knowing what Moms should rate: Price? Parking? Location? (I think criteria will be different for each category.)

If you have a moment, please add, remove and change my list below. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks for your time.

Dyslexically yours,

Paul D. Smith

What a task!! But I’d be the first to use it. Areas I would like to see:

The hard part for me is discerning the hype from fact. I have to remember which program, kit, material set is really for which need. Many of the programs are sold as cure-alls. It is hard to keep straight:earobics vs fast forward or Interactive meterone vs brain skills and the list goes on and on.This list serv has been invaluable in this regard.

Up to date assistive technology information is difficult to find. There have been new advances in speech recognition/dictation software but many of the guides/links/resources are out of date.

Finding a good multi-discipline testing/diagnosis site. The school psych wasn’t much help, the pediatrician wasn’t much help.
