college for Orthodox kid with LDs

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Any suggestions? My son is only a sophomore— GPA is 3.25 in private day school and has some accomodations. His PSAT predict an SAT of 1100-1200. He uses a computer for all word processing. His weaknesses are mainly in writing (grammar/punctuation/spelling/structuring what he knows for expositon) and also in math— first kid to know concepts and goes directly to answers. Even though he’s generally right he has trouble w/completing steps as he solves problems— careless errors etc…

His passion is history and everything Jewish. He thinks he might want to major in business with a minor in history or Jewish studies. Needs kosher dining and access to enough Jewish young men for prayer. Wondering what schools would be good??

At the University of Memphis, which is where I am a student, they have a great Judiac studies program. You would not htink…Memphis=Judiaic Studies…but there program is nice. I am an English major there, but I have taken more than a few Judiac Studies courses and think that whole department rocks.

I am a bad typest…

Their Offices of Student Disabilities is in the process of having some housekeeping done. One fellow in a position of authority there, has already been fired. I feel confident the issues those offices had shall be resolved, so do not worry about that.

My Uni’s web site is memphis.edu

I do not know if there are Kosher meals (I do not live on campus and bring my lunch, eh? So I have no idea) but there is a Jewish Student Organisation as well as a Jewish Community Center really close to the University. And, there is a chain of Grocery stores that are Kosher called Schnucks…those are everywhere.

peace…

My daughter is a freshman at YU. She’s currently an Accounting major at Sy Syms(YU). Also how about U of Maryland,College Park & Rutgers, New Brunswick Campus. They all should be doable.

In what state does he want to attend college?

I recently saw a list of schools that provide good accomodations for students with LDs in a book in a local library here in the Greater Cleveland Area. I cannot recall the title, but it was something like post secondary and LD.

As for kosher food and a minyan, are there any schools in your county, perhaps, where he could go? If he wants to go away from home, check out YU.

I went to Kent State for undergrad and cooked my own food, but there is not a minyan there.

What about a local community college for the first 2 years?
