Hampshire College?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I was wondering does anyone have any experience or knowledge about Hampshire College in Amherst, Ma in relation to special services and LD student success?

Perhaps I shouldn’t answer your post because I don’t have specific information about Hampshire and how it meets the needs of LD students. I considered Hampshire for my own son but I wouldn’t send him or any other student to Hampshire who has any issues with writing. Hampshire is a wonderful school with enlightened philosophies but its way of measuring learning is solely dependent on a student’s ability to write and there’s no way ‘round’ that.

Good luck.

Hi,

Based on the “Colleges that change lives” book I thought Hampshire might be good for my son. We visited and I liked the kids there but we decided against it because it demands a tremendous amount of self-direction from the kids. Many kids drop out because they needed more structure I think. Also I hesitated to put my son, who takes quite a few drugs for cognitive functioning, into an environment which is so into marijuana etc. I know all schools are to some extent, but Hampshire is way up there…

have you considered Marlboro, in Vermont? It’s similar to Hampshire, but when my son and I visited both schools, we sensed that Marlboro was less druggy, and that marlboro offered more concern for students. I got the feeling that at hampshire, a student could spend a year in his room smoking pot, and no one would take notice. At Marlboro, classes are small, faculty and students spend a lot of time together, including in the dining hall and “town meetings” where all mix.
