PSAT & SAT prep courses

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I live in central NJ and was wondering if there are any psat/sat prep courses for the l/d. My son has CAPD and the courses like Kaplan and Princeton Review are not really geared for l/d. I asked them if they had special classes that would go at a slower pace and Kaplan said they were looking into offering a class but as of now they do not. They suggested a private tutor for math and language. Any suggestions? Thanks.

My child took a math SAT prep course offered at the local community college. It was not geared specifically for LD. They used the “10 Real SAT’s” book— they did the tests for hw and went over them in class. I think practicing the actual test format was helpful. She has many gaps in her math skills that this class was not designed to address (we knew that going in). The advantage of the class was that she had to do the work to be prepared for each Saturday’s class (often on friday night!). She was not motivated as my non-LD child was to use CD rom software at her own pace. She did manage to raise her score 50 points.

Private tutoring if you can afford it might be the way to go. Do a search on google or any good search engine as these days there are cheaper services than those offered by Kaplan and Princeton Review. Go to www.getprepped.com and see if they have private tutors in your area. We recently used them for my own son and they were half the price and the service and the tutor were great.

Shop around a bit and you might find a private tutor for less money than you’ll pay Kaplan or Princeton Review.

Good luck.
