16yr old wants to go back to school

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My 16 yr old wants to go back to school this fall for his junior year, but he has severe spelling and math skills and has a hard time reading for information.I,’m wondering if he would have to take a placement test,or would he just go directly to 11th grade. He has been homeschooled since 5th grade. Thanks for any help……Lorraine in Ohio

It depends on the school. Call your local high school and ask to speak with a guidance counselor. He/she can help you determine placement and maybe help you and your son to understand the challenges that lie ahead.

Hi Lorraine,

I agree with Sue, I would check with the school that he wants to attend and inquire about their requirements.I know in my county, starting with 9th grade, a placement test is required for re-entry back into public school. Because he is learning challenged in certain areas, he may qualify for certain programs, and special testing may be required for proper placement.

Lorraine, I have a question that maybe you can help me with. I have a child that is ADD/LD, math being his weakest area. What type of yearly achievement testing worked best for your son?

Good luck and I wish the best for both of you.
