4 Blocks Reading

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I teach 3rd and 4th grade LD students. I have just started using the 4 Blocks reading program. I need suggestions on how I could use the word wall words as my spelling words for the week. Does anyone use this program with LD students and have you incorporated the wall words with spelling?

I used 4 blocks this last year with my 6th grade LD class. I used the 5 word wall words and then some of the pattern words from usually making words or one of the on the back activites for spelling words. You can also use a pattern word from the word wall. For example, if one of the word wall words is went then, you could use other -ent words for spelling words. Then you add prefixes and suffixes too. For example, went is the pattern word, use vent, venting, prevented as spelling words. The point is to teach then that when they know one word they can use that to spell other words.

In our building (general ed. and special ed.) we did away with weekly spelling tests. Children are held accountable for the wordwall words in their writing. This was not easy but the return seems to be great. Now children spell correctly within the context of writing rather than in an artificial spelling test situation. Best of luck.
