My son who is 8 years old was diagnosed 2 years ago with ADHD. He has always had trouble in the classroom with handwriting, reading and processing information. He is on a 504. When he came home with his work for the last couple of weeks, I noticed that his spelling was horrible. He is spelling everything phonetically. After reading about Dysgraphia, I think this may be what he has. I don’t know anything about Dysgraphia. Where can I get more information and how would you recommend we study with him at home so that he can go into the classroom and spell the words correctly. He has 25 spelling words which I think seems like a lot. The words don’t seem that easy either. Also, his handwriting is really poor. Not all the time, though. Sometimes I can’t read it at all and other times it is nice. Of course, that is ADHD, but are there any suggestions for ways that I can help him with his writing at home. He is in school 8 hours per day, and it could take all night to do homework if we made him. A lot of times, I let it go because he is so frustrated with it that it makes us all crazy. I am very concerned about him going into the upper grades. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I had the same problems with his teachers giving him an excessive amount of spelling words, for a child with ADHD. He was evaluated and given modification in regular class, whereas he was given 10 words out of the 15 or 20 words. He would could attempt to spell the remainder of the words that the regular class was given, if he tried these words and missed them they would not affect his spelling grade, but his teacher would give him extra credit if he got one or more of the additional words right. My son is currently in the 4th grade and this is the first year that he has made a “B” in spelling.Currently my son is in self contained special education, which along with Adderall, he had improved in reading along from 2nd grade to beginning 4th grade level.Just for a side note, his first grade teacher had the nerve to tell me that spelling wasn’t important. That the technology in today’s world, he could use spell check. She no longer teaches at the school my son attends.
