ADHD student who is defiant

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I teach K-2 in a parochial school system. I have 13 students this year one of which is ADHD. I have never dealt with a student like this before and he has been severly disrupting my classroom. He refuses to come to my table for our Math and Reading lessons. If I physically move him there he will not sit still at all. The minute I turn my back he is either gone or on the floor rolling around. If I try to pick him up and put him in his seat he will “go limp” and I will not be able to move him. If I ask him to do something he says NO. Ihave NO IDEA how to handle this child. I have read a few books on ADHD but I don’t know how to MAKE him stay so I can teach him and his fellow Kindergarten students. He distracts everyone in the room and I spend most of my teaching time trying to get him to focus. My school has only three teachers and we do not have anyone that we can send him to during the day—I’M IT. HELP

What does he like? What are his interest? Maybe if you relate what you are teaching to what he is interested in he will listen and behave. Being forcefull with him is probably not a good solution b/c i know as a stubborn person i become even more stubborn when people try to force me to do things that i do not want to do. i am not saying that you have to relate ever single lesson to this child. most of the time a majority of the class has a lot of the same interest. possibly, try to even do some type of lesson that involves activities where children need to move around and be involvoed. this is just some advice…i am not a professional but just thought it could be of some help.
