Anti-social, hostile students

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

What’s your approach for occasional anti-social, hostile students who tend to publicly call people bad names? The students seem to be a bit impulsive but closer to being anti-social than anything else. Some of the students even say they are being - enjoy being anti-social on purpose.

How old are the students? I teach middle school mostly and in middle school I’d sit down with the student and ask them why they’re doing it. Some kids do feel alientated from school and/or other students and enjoy striking back with name-calling. I try to find out what it is that’s alienating them. Usually they have experienced unfairness at the hands of a teacher or other students. But hostility is hard to “manage”. It’s a deep felt emotion and it doesn’t “manage” well.

I’d take the same approach. I’d find the teacher who has the best relationship with each of the students. I’d speak to the hostility that the student evidences. I’d ask the teacher to have a “sit-down” with the student asking questions like - how are you? etc. but I’d also make sure to get to… Ms. Jones tells me you’re hurling names around her class at other students? What’s up with that? Why are you doing that?

If they’re doing in your class, find out if they do it in others. If they’re doing it in everybody’s, how many of these kids are there?
