AUDITORY LEARING DISABILITY?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son is 12 and in the 7th grade he was tested last year after several years of trying to get the school to test him. They did a test where they asked him to repeat back words spoken to him. he got three correct out of ten, but the school has determined that this does not constitute a problem, but he has had trouble learnig to read has a poor vocabulary and great difficulty sounding out words although he can carry on a reasonable conversation, and has very low reading comprehension without constant coaching, getting the school to do more testing seems hopeless and we cannot afford private testing, does anyone have any suggestions?

Hey Chris.
My duaghter has APD..Receptive and Expressive. I would keep pushing. Your sons problems sound similar to my daughters. What about “attention to task”? Just curious. Sometimes language difficulties can mimick ADHD/ADD.
I would also ask for a Language Eval. (Not Speech) This will address some of the issues you are having. Since the SD doesn’t feel there is a problem..go a different route. But it sounds like you have every right to be concerned greatly.
Request the any testing in writing…also have a copy for your records. In the request…state what you put in the post regarding his ongoing difficulties.
Gool luck Chris,
Binky

he does have difficulty focusing on work, and staying focused, needs to be redirected constantly and have distractions removed at home school will not compensate, says he is just too social. He is very popular with his peers.

My daughter still needs occasional 1 on 1 to finish work or stay on task….I’m just a parent here…but your problems sound familiar.

Chris,

Did they do a complete educational evaluation? Did he qualify for LD in reading? How are his grades? The results of one subtest are really not meaningful. We’d need to see all the test results to really comment. But complete inability to focus even at home sounds like ADHD. Has that been explored?
