Best keyboarding program for nonverbal LD/ADHD 9yr old

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My 9 year old 3rd grade son has problems handwriting despite OT for years. Last summer I tried to teach him keyboarding with the Typing for Kids program. However, many of the games were just too fast for him to be able to experience any success (for example, he was supposed to type the letters shown on the screen before the fish got to them—next to impossible for him). I need a fun program which will move at a much slower pace so that he will not get frustrated and give up. None of the reviews I have read seem to address this issue. As is seen with nonverbal learning disabilities, he has a lot of visual perceptual issues as well.

Thanks for any input!

Have you considered not using games? For some kids the “learn to type” programs just don’t work but having them practice just basic typing such as copying a story can be more helpful. You may also consider looking at word prediction programs or Speech-to-Text programs as he gets older. These reduce the amount of typing needed and can reduce frustration.
