Dear Mom, Try the “National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped”. My son has to have Accelerated Reading points (AR) for part of his reading grade in school and this has allowed him to get the points he needs.The web site is www.loc.gov/nls. There you can get an application which must be signed by a physician. Then you call and get the tapes you want, all free. You don’t even have to pay for postage. They also will send you the cassette player as the tapes are recorded on different tapes which can’t be played in regular cassette players. The tapes are narrarated by adults but my child enjoys them. They don’t have all of the books on the AR list but they have a lot of them.I then go to the local library to find the books of the tapes I ordered so that my child reads along while listening to the tape. This program has allowed my child to read book at or above his age level rather than reading below his age level due to his reading problems. It has opened a whole new world for him. : My daughter had all of her textbooks on tape. I don’t really know now who puts them out but just do a search for textbooks on tape and it will lead you there. She used them for her first year in community college but since she reads now, she doesn’t use them any more. They were a great help to her in middle and high school.
Try Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. It cost $75 to join for the 1st, $25 renewal. You need to buy a tape recorder from them because the tapes are 4 track. (They sent information to parents stating that if their child qualifies the school district can register and pay for the child). Players also play 2 track. I recommend Tutor recorder/player for $99. The recordings are by volunteers so they might not be the best in listening quality. They record text books. If they don’t have it recorded they will do it for you. You can check if books are rerorded right on-line. Libraries usually have some books on tape to check out.Helen
