Just curious, my husband and his older brother are both color deficient, they both have had difficulty learning to read in school. Actually the brother has a worse case of color deficiency and is most definitely dyslexic, my husband is red/green colorblind and is a slow reader (years of reading class in school).
I was wondering if any of you all had seen any kind of correlation between being color deficient and dyslexic (or reading problems)? Curiously enough, my husband has adhd (adult diagnosis), a different brother has been diagnosed adhd and the brother I describe above is most likely adhd also.
Colorblindness is a genetically linked trait affecting more males than females. (A female needs to get it from both her mother and father, a male can get it from the mother alone, although the mother herself will not be colorblind.) Since it’s a genetic trait, it does run in families. You should be able to find lots of research on colorblindness alone, since it’s a genetic trait that is well understood.
A dyslexia gene has not been identified, although there are indications that it may run in families too. I have never seen any research indicating a relationship between the two. However, as another point in your comparison, my father and all his brothers are colorblind. All also learned to read before they entered kindergarten. The colorblindness was not even identified until all of them were in high school (which corresponded to the time in the 1940s when the spot tests for colorblindness was developed.)
In your husband’s case, it is probably more likely the adhd and dyslexia are linked rather than the dyslexia and colorblindness.
