Confused regarding dau. education

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Ok, I ‘ll admit I’m confused regarding my dau. academic needs. The ps says she is doing fine, working at 4th/5th level except in reading. However the achievement tests say she is working at 2nd/3rd grade in most things. I’m confused and distressed… The ps. say her IQ is between 68-82 and she is borderline MR. I disagree and every profession outside the ps states my dau. IQ is in the 100+ range. Ok, so why isn’t she learning??? I know she has LD’s and dyslexia, SID, NVLD etc. The question I have is what is the best approach for her??? How can I help her achieve her maximum potential??? She wants to go to college and be a vet. What does my dau. need?? Right now she wants to hs. and that is fine with me. My dau. is 11 yo in 5th. How can I be of maximum assistance to her?? Thanks, Sue

Find the ways that learning works for her. This can be quite the process but well worth it. I have found with my dd that you can’t ever use a “blanket” statement of how a “dyslexic” or “dyscalculic” learns and use the “researched” programs. We have had to try many different things before finding the path that works for her.
