My son is 10 yr. old and has been diagnosed with NVLD and I would like to know what curriculum would be best for him. He reads at grade level. I need grammar, spelling, history. I have science. Thanks.

Cindy, since you are homeschooling and have the advantage of choosing your son’s curriculum, you also have the advantage of HOW you present that curriculum. Teaching specifically with visual imagery in mind might make a big difference for your son. In the beginning you may have to use your visual imagery skills to support him, but as you consistently present with imagery in mind, he will become better and better at the process.

Research has shown that imagery can as much as double comprehension, which makes schooling so much more enjoyable.

There is no curriculum that is considered “best” for children with NVLD; it is more in the strategies that are used to teach them. As you are homeschooling you know your child better than anyone. I would take what you already know about how your son learns best along with the recommendations that you were given when he was diagnosed and use those as you look through various home school curricula. When you’ve narrowed it down to 3-4 you might want to call and speak with the customer service representatives of those companies, describe your son, and see what they think. From personal experience I know that companies such as A Beka will be more rigid with their requirements than programs such as Sonlight, Morning Star Academy (an on-line school), or Math-U-See, which are either willing to work with your child at their level or allow the parent to implement as-needed.
