Explicit vs. Direct Instruction

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Between explicit and direct instruction, which do you think is better to use with students with Specific Learning Disabilities? Does it depend on the age or the subject being taught?

It depends on the LD?
Where the basic difference, is between ‘whole to part’ and ‘part to whole’ thinkers?

It depends on the needs if the child. This is the nitty gritty of the IEP—individualized instruction. In reality, most schools cannot do such so they semcookiemcutter programs (albeit many are sucessful) and those who learn and can and those who Ned more intensive remediation may be stuck with the cookie cutter programs unless there is strong instructional leadership at the top level.

This same discussion is on the special ed. chatboard on teachers.net; check that out. You will need to scroll down to find it as it was from a week or more ago, but it is there.
