EyeQ software - has anyone used it?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m an LD teacher. I’ve seen commercials for reading software called EyeQ. It purports to train students to read 2 - 10 times faster and ALSO increase comprehension. Has anyone tried this software with LD kids?

Thanks,

Christa

EyeQ is a vision training program. If an individual student’s disability is vision related, it could (maybe - I don’t have actual experience with the product) be useful as part of the medical angle to teaching reading.
HOWEVER, for LD students, speed is not the issue. (I’d even question whether the product would work for vision related LDs - while I”m sure they market to people who struggle with reading, I’d be willing to bet that that’s not what was behind the development of the product. If I were considering purchasing it, that’s what I’d look for.)
If you make the reading process easier, comprehension tends to improve because more brain power can be given to thinking about what a passage means.
While vision problems do keep many from being effective readers, most reading problems that get the “LD” classification are more related to processing the sounds of the words and making the association between the letters and the sounds. Speed reading lessons won’t target that.
