Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My Grandson has never called anyone by his first name and noone seems to be able to tell us what this problem is called or what disorder it’s linked to. He has been diagnosed w ADHD & Phonological processing disorder and disgraphia but I know there are more problems going on with him. He is 11 and reads at the level of 1st grade 3rd month. Please help if you have heard of this thanks so much.

Does your grandson have word retrieval problems (just can’t remember the names of people) or does he have problems with social skills in general? My dd is dyslexic and can’t remember names. She was in a girl scout troop for an entire year and couldn’t remember most of the other girl’s names. She also has difficulty remembering what common objects are called. My older ds is dyslexic also, but he has few expressive difficulties. He has struggled mightily with reading.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that he may just have a type of dyslexia that manifests itself as word retrieval and reading difficulties. But if he has problems relating to people in general and isn’t engaging socially you may be looking at an autism-related issue.

A good article on the web about helping children with word retrieval: http://members.tripod.com/~Caroline_Bowen/wordretrieval.html

Has he been evaluated by a neuropsychologist? It can be very helpful to know specifically what is causing the difficulties so you can get help.
