I have been trying for the last year and a half to get answers and haven’t. My son has been honor roll for two years now but when he writes fast ( he mostly prints it takes him longer to write) you can not read what he wrote. When he is given enough time he has a nice printing. The problem is we do not have enough time in a period for him to write nice enough to read. any suggestions?ONe time we stayed up from 5 to 12 getting all his homeowrk done. I finally just typed some out for him.

You don’t mention his age.

An occupational therapy evaluation could tell you if there are problems with hand muscle strength, fine motor coordination, etc. that are interfering with writing. An OT can also tell you if it’s likely to be dysgraphia.

You could also try http://www.callirobics.com .

In addition to what Nancy said, absolutely do some of the writing for him! You can write the teacher a note and say that since he has writing problems which greatly increase his homework time, that you will be having him dictate some of it to you. Also, by all means get him a keyboarding program and teach him to type. It is pretty rare for anyone his age to really make huge gains in handwriting, because it simply takes too much time to work on.

If you could get a diagnosis, though, you might be able to get him a 504 plan to allow him an extended time accommodation for school work. Your best bet might be a private eval, though, because it may not be significant enough for the school OT to qualify him. Here, at least, OT can only be added as a related service with another disability as primary.
