High School math - homeschool curriculum recommendations pls

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I would like to know what curriculum other homeschool students are using if they have Learning Disabilities and struggle severely with math. My daughter gets all mixed up with word problems and application questions on tests, among other things. We have been using Saxon Math Homeschool which is good because it has a lot of repetition, but there are problems with it as well and I would like to hear from other homeschool families/teachers who have experience with high school math.

She is nowhere near being able to pass the PSAT on math and I am not sure what is the best way to approach college applications.

Thank you.

My suggestion is Math-U-See; there have been other posts here about it and you should be able to find them if you search. Their website is www.mathusee.com; the curriculum is designed for homeschool so you should have no trouble using it. Their is a free placement test on their website as well as a link (I think) to a Yahoo group. Many of the parents on the Yahoo group are in a similar situation as you are - homeschooling a student with LD or more severe disabilities, and can offer suggestions and support. The free placement test will help you decide exactly at what llevel your child should be placed - read the directions carefully as there are specific things you should watch for as you administer it.

Good luck!

We used Aleks.com last year for Algebra. My son passed with an 85 after 2 years of failure. I didn’t help him one bit. I got it off a forum like this last summer. It was GREAT!, and I had no frustration teaching him and wondering why he wasn’t getting it. It costs about $20 a month.

Hi Rose, Thanks for your comment about ALEKS. We did the assessment and tried a sample lesson but my daughter was a bit confused at one point and I wonder if you could enlighten me. Can you email me privately? I have struggled with this LD Online website and can’t seem to figure out how I can email people privately.

Thanks,
