a picture and story way to memorize the facts

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

For those students that struggle with memorizing times tables and addition facts, try the “visual” approach. Some students can drill and drill and facts just don’t stick. When the numbers are associated with a visual image and story, the student can finally have something in their mind to “hang on to and “tag” the fact for retrieval. To teach 6 x 6, for instance, try showing the picture of the sixes crossing the desert with their tongues hanging out and drooping shoulders, heavy from the heat, tell the student to remember they are “thirsty sixes” and they will recall the answer 36!! I found this method worked wonders in my 3rd grade class when we learned our times tables. I was borrowing someone’s books and had not been able to find this for 2 years. Glad to see it again.
