I am working on my graduate project. I am designing an alternative assessment. Presentations of learning ‘evolve’ beginning with a written auto biography (which transforms to a resume over time), then each semester an oral presentation is prepared, including audio and visual enhancements, and actual products created by the student over the course of their studies that semester. the ‘panel’ they present to consist of members of the surrounding community (business, teachers, interested adults, etc). The presentation includes all of their studies, what they learned and how that learning will affect their future, and how it will be used. The written ‘reports’ are submitted in advance, so panel members can get to know the students ahead of time.Here is the question, I need current research that has been done in the field of ‘demonstration assessments’, or ‘presentations of knowledge’. This form of alternative assessment is being utilized in the private sector of education and can it be transferred to all students? : I think much of we do in education, old or new, doesn’t have a research base to support it. What kind of a research base are you looking for? With or without it, your idea seems a good one to me. It asks the student to acquire good life skills such as writing a resume and presenting themself to an audience. I’d eagerly send my children to any school so enlightened as to use these kind of practices.You might research the Waldorf schools a bit. Since their beginning, they have used alternative assessments. At the end of every unit, all students, regardless of age or grade, write a book about their learning experience in that unit rather than take memorization-based tests.I am working on my graduate project.
