Quick Math Assessment

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am a first year HS LD teacher and am in need of a quick math assessment to use for my students. I started in mid-November and came into a class behind a long term sub. There were NO levels for anyone or anything…I have taken care of reading and english, but I can’t seem to come up with anything for Math. Any suggestions?

I have always used the Brigance Inventory of Basic Skills. It shows me right where the problem areas are and gives me something to measure progress with, too. We have a snow day today, but I can see who distributes it next week if you can’t find it on the web. It comes in a notebook and is easy to use. It also gives sample goals and objectives.

Thank you so much! I will be looking into the Brigance Inventory…does it come in just Math or do you have to get everything? Would it be worth it to get the whole thing? Thank again!

Nici,

It is very comprehensive, so if you’d never need a screening tool for reading, etc., you could probably find something less expensive. I always tested reading and math. There are many many subtests, too, within those areas. The Brigance Comprehensive Inventory of Basic Skills Revised (green) costs $159. and you also need student record books (10 for $35).

In the same catalog, I am seeing another product that tests just math, so you might want to check it out, too. The company is Curriculum Associates www.curriculumassociates.com.

Thank you for your suggestion. It has helped so much to hear the opinion of someone who has used this type of assessment. Thanks again!!!!!!
