Reading & writing self-study grade 9

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi all - I am looking for a workbook or home program that a family can buy to help their child with reading comprehension and analytical response writing for grade 9. They are going to France for the summer and can not enroll in any programs. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Maybe 1-2 years - but he managed to get D’s in English and History for 9th grade, so I think they want to work at that level, because he is moving up to 10th grade.
Thanks,
Ginny

Two ideas:

(1) I have seen ads for a new book called “Better Answers” by Ardith Davis Cole, Stenhouse Publishing. It looks very interesting, breaking down the test and assignment process into clear steps, the first one being “Restate the Question” — as the author points out, an awful lot of the time students don’t know what they are supposed to be answering so it is no surprise they don’t get where they want to go. Starting with this kind of straightforward approach looks good to me, although I haven’t seen the rest of the book.
This is intended to be used by a teacher in a class, but no doubt a homeschooling parent could use it; it is not a teach-yourself.

(2) Go to scholarschoice.ca (I do not work for them, but they have a lot of good stuff) and look in their catalogue under “comprehension”. They have a number of workbooks with lots of practice. Select with care, as some of their things are good and some are not — I go for plain packaging and lots of text, not flashy presentation. I always start at a lower level than the student’s official grade, better to succeed at Grade 6 or 7 than to practice failure at Grade 9. You start where the student has a handle on the work, and then work upwards.
