single mom wants to homeschool

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I would love to homeschool my 8 yr old, gr. 3 son as school is not a place where he can feel successful due to his significant LD’s. I am doing work with him at home, as well as getting outside tutoring and he is getting burned out with all of this remediation AND trying to do grade 3 homework that he really isn’t ready for and just can’t cope with it anymore. (his current teacher very unsympathetic - previous ones were wonderful). The school has done little to help him and he just crys every day not wanting to go, self esteem is plummeting. He used to be extremely happy but now I can’t get him out of bed in the mornings on school days. We are both at the end of our rope and the stress level is too much for an 8 yr old to have to take! My problem is that I am a single mom who works full time. Do any others homeschool in this situation and if so, how do they manage it with daycare and the scheduling of it all. Any advice, we are desperate!

Hi ME, I’m not a single mom BUT I’m on several email listserves through Yahoo groups and there are single mom’s out there hs’ing their child. These mom’s work at home so I’m not sure if that is your situation. If you don’t get any responses here you might try looking at some of the email groups over at yahoo, join a few, search their archives for information and/or pose the same question there.carole

It does sound like homeschool would be ideal for him. The great thing about homeschool is that you can go at your son’s pace whereas, in school, he is expected to go at the pace of the 30 other children. I only work part-time and, have to admit that even doing that can be exhausting. We work our homeschool schedule around my work schedule i.e. we work weekends and have 2 other days off during the week while I work. Check with your child-care provider to find out if she is willing to help you out. Maybe you can bring some of his work there. If he works well on his own, you may be able to set him up with his schoolwork in the kitchen while you make supper, etc. I will not sit here and tell you that it will be easy in fact, you will probably find it exhausting yourself at times but, it is the most rewarding experience. Get in touch with your local homeschool associations. If you don’t know of one, check with your local library or with your church.

PASSWORD>aa4um5Lp2CxdUThere are some single moms who homeschool. Some are lucky enough to get lots of help and support from the children’s grandparents- in fact some of the ladies in our homeschool group are grandma’s. Some single parents get together and share homeschooling and child care by juggling their work schedules, taking different shifts. Others work from home. I’m sure there are other possibilities- these are just the situations of some single parents I’ve met.You can do this, but I would encourage you to get your support network in place before you start and think about how to simplify and organize your schedule and responsibilities, because homeschooling and working and still taking care of dinner and laundry will be very demanding.Jean: I would love to homeschool my 8 yr old, gr. 3 son as school is not a
