Suggestions for improving expressive writing

My 11 1/2 yo,6th grader has been struggling with his writing skills since Kindergarten. He hates to write to begin with which doesn’t help. His reading comprehensive and verbal skills are very high, but his expressive writing is more like a 3rd grader. He forgets to capitalize the first word of a sentence, doesn’t put a period at the end, and often puts a capital letter in the middle of a sentence rather than stop for a milisecond to think which way a b or d face, and writes the shortest sentence he can think of. He has been in resource off and on for this, but it hasn’t really seemed to help much.Any ideas on how to help him to WANT to put his thoughts on paper?

: He probably really does want to put his thoughts down but from the things you’re describing, it’s a struggle for him to do so. In the face of that struggle, he makes his sentences short.To lengthen his sentences, you’d need to reduce the struggle for him. Has he ever tried word processing instead of pen and pencil writing? That can be very helpful to some children who struggle with expressive writing.It deserves to be mentioned, though, that some of the issues you’re describing are things that may go away as he gets older. It’s not uncommon for children of his age to reverse their bs and ds.I sense you think of this as a motivation thing but in my teaching experience, children who make writing mechanics errors are not under motivated but rather have an extra burden in their learning style.My 11 1/2 yo,6th grader has been struggling with his writing skills
