transporation for young adults still in school

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son is 20 years old and has previously been diagnosed with NLD/PDD NOS, and recently the diagnosis was upped to high functioning Autism. He struggles socially and recently lost his drivers license. I have asked the school about appropriate help with transporation issues. The school offers the “Big Yellow School Bus”, which my question is, how is this appropriate transporation for a 20 year old. The transporation should meet the student’s needs, as well. For example, how is this helping him to transition to adulthood? He is supposed to call for the Yellow school bus when he needs transporation, as an adult? Whey not a taxi cab or other means, that other peers(which would be nondisabled peers) his age would use? They say it is all they will offer him. Why can’t they use cab services?
