Which School ?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My nephew has ADHD and is going to live with us in June. He has trouble
finishing work on time and since his Mom has died is quite behind in all of his subjects. He wants to go to the same Private Prep. School as my daughter. He is trying his best but can not complete his work. He is getting special tutoring and help through a wonderful Special Program in Public School. He just started taking Adderol for two weeks and has changed to a higher dose.
This Prep. School does not have the services he would need to succeed with
his difficulties. What should I do? He is depressed as well, has a short attention
span and needs somebody sitting beside him being very creative to pull the work out of him, he truly wants to do well. He is getting all the medical and
counciling that is warranted for his situation. I’m afraid that not letting him try
would lower his low-self esteem even more. Any Comments???? I would like to hear from you…

When thinking about schools, I always ask - what’s the alternative?
If he would not attend your daughter’s school, what school would he go to? Does that school have the services he needs? Would the private school even accept him with grades that probably reflect his struggle? Most private schools in my area will not accept students unless they have very high grades or unless the private school is a special needs private school.

i think that you may have to have a talk with your nephew and ask him which school he wishes to attend and have him if it is possible to visit the school(s) and have a discussion with tentative teachers always keep his emotional and educational needs in mind you sound like a very nice and concerned aunt your nephew is very fortunate also have your daughter tutor your nephew for about 30-45 minutes a day both your daughter and your nephew will benefit
