Wilson reading program

Thanks to everyone for there feedback on repeating 1st grade.

We had our meeting yesterday with the school. Here is what they said they would do please let me know what you think.

1. They will keep him in 2nd grade but will put his reading back to the 1st grade level that he left off in last year.

2. They will use the Wilson reading system. I am trying to find out information about that if anyone has any let me know.

3. Math seems to be stronger than reading so they are leaving that at a 2nd grade level.

4. His goal on the IEP is to reach the mid 2nd grade level by June.

All of this sounds good but I am not sure they can pull it off. The teacher said again that she is not good with phonics. We asked to see work that he has done each week and she said she will try and send some home but she gets busy and forgets to make sure that he is bringing it home. I also asked for his reading book to be sent home every night. Well he didn’t bring it home yesterday or today. So I am not feeling all that great about there new plan. I guess I will ask to buy one to keep at home.

I also bought Reading Reflex. Will it confuse him to have wilson at school and reading reflex at home.

Hi, Michelle,

If he can have Wilson by a trained teacher, than that’s a good thing. Find out if she is trained or certified in it, though. That is important.

I haven’t seen Wilson up close, so I am not sure whether it would confuse him or not. But I think I’d be inclined to try. There’s a lot of Wilson that he is too young to do. It is really meant for third grade up.

I doubt he’ll get confused. THey’re teaching him to use the same kinds of strategies and b makes the same sound in both methods :-) (Tho’ that *is* a good question.)
Can you set up a template for her to fill out on a daily or weekly basis so she can have some routine? Sounds introduced, sight words to review, words he missed that need practice? In fact, if it were in a notebook then you’d have documentation of what she’s doing & not doing for IEP meeitng purposes… but speaking as a former teacher… that would *really* improve the odds that I’d get it to ya, especially if somehow you could make it a regular routine. (How “busy” and disorganized is this teacher? That would determine just how structured I’d try to make it)

Hi, Helen,

I would be very interested to hear about the use of Wilson with children younger than third grade. Do they not have trouble learning syllable types and all that? Just wondered. I’ve recently taken Language! training and it is also really designed for older elementary kids on up. So I am interested to hear how it can be adapted successfully for use with younger children.

Hi Michele,

I’m a special ed. teacher (4th and 5th grades) currently getting certified in Wilson. I’ve been working with it intensively since January and have seen wonderful results. It is a multisensory Orton Gillingham approach to reading. It is different from other OG approaches in that it uses tapping. Students are taught to tap the sounds of a word as they say them. This kinesthetic piece of Wilson gives children another foothold to learning- now they can feel each sound as they say it. Wilson has a new program, as I understand for children younger than third grade. Wilson’s website, www.wilsonlanguage.com will tell you more. Even so, if the teacher is trained in Wilson, I think your child would be fine with the regular program. It really depends on the qulaity of the teaching. Demand a trained Wilson teacher, preferably one who is certified. Wilson is a very structured reading program that moves at the pace of your child. It is diagnostic teaching and focuses specifically on your child’s strengths and weaknesses. The lessons are very structured with a good deal of review and new material slowly and consistently being added as your child is ready. Good luck!
