Hi all,
I’m just a mom. However I have a 9 year old, third grade son with a severe writing disability, compounded by his identified anxiety disorder. His current IEP only has goals for the mechanics of writing - and he is doing pretty well with those. But, given about 1 hour of classroom time to write a story, he came home with “I wnet to teh rivre and cam bak up.” So we spent 3 hours of direct 1:1 instruction from me webbing for ideas, breaking the web into manageable pieces for my son, and then he wrote it on the computer. The computer does spell check automatically. I didn’t correct it after the computer version, and when his teacher edited it, there were more than 50% corrections.
Do any of you have good IEP goals that can help him?
Thanks,
Lil
I have been reading a great book on LD’s and it suggests that if you have problems with a child’s IEP (like your son not seeming to benefit from special ed program yet), that you talk to the special ed teacher about it and revise the goals. It states that goals should be very specific; talk to the classroom teacher also and be sure that the special ed teacher and classroom teacher are working together to help your son. Good luck!
