Has anyone ever heard of the Jordan Oral Screening? Since our district only uses teacher observation to monitor progress on the IEPs, I asked for an objective test to be done so that I had some measurable progress. I also wanted to compare their scores of grade equivalency to those scored by the neuropsychologist. Just wanted to see if the school is on the up and up with me because I can’t get any straight answers from them. She chose the Jordan and the Kaufman. The Kaufman, though, she said my son refused to do because it required him to act out what words said. Therefore, we could not get a score.
It took forever to get these done, then another lifetime to get the results. I really threw her for a loop when I asked for a written report of the scores for his file (another 2 weeks). She then informed me that these scores aren’t really accurate (typical response from our district) because the Jordan is only a screening. Sounds like dodging accountability to me? What do you all think? The school is aware that we are doing the neuro eval.
Re: Jordan Oral Screening?
Very interesting. I was looking to measure progress because he has been given no instruction from the resource room, only brought in to redo papers that he bombed on in class. She says that she used it last year and he was at a 2.8 instructional level in April of last year. This year she says he has gone up to a 4.1 instructional level. They are trying to tell me that he is improving in the areas of comprehension and decoding. I do not agree. He is finishing 4th grade, cannot complete comprehension exercises and cannot sound out difficult words. He tells me that he just skips over them. At this point he is not independent, we have had to read the novels to him so that he can keep up with the class and answer the questions and pass the tests.

What about a WISC or Woodcock Johnson? What tests did they use to evaluate him the first time and how long ago was it??

Re: Jordan Oral Screening?
There is no way that one of those quick-and-dirty word list tests can give a good indication of progress, especially when the teacher’s the one teaching and giving the test — I know that even with all good integrity, it’s awfully easy to make sure that a few more of those words that you know are on the “test” get covered.
Keep reading to him :)
The Jordan is a screening test used to put students into reading groups, it has 13 levels of 10 words each. It is not diagnostic, and does not give standard scores. What did you want measured?
