ADD'rs: Lefties or Righties?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have been doing some classroom observations and it is very interesting to me that it seems as though more often than not, students who are left-handed are exhibiting ADHD behaviors. I have always “surveyed” a room for other lefties since I was a kid…just one of those idiosynchratic things about me. My younger son has ADHD, and is left-handed, like me. Anyone?

That’s interesting. I’m a lefty too. As I was growing up I realized how different it was - almost everyone around me was right-handed - so for an observer, I would have seemed like an anomaly - even without my ADD. ADD is supposed to be hereditary…is left-handedness hereditary too? It just may be possible that being left-handed could aggravate your ADD symptoms. I don’t know…

There are lots of lefties in my family, my grandpa, my dad (and his 2 brothers), 2 of my brothers, and my son. All them are dyslexic. My son is also AHDD, inattentive type. My son that is right handed has high functioning autism and my daughter who is ambidextrous (sp?) is gifted. I find the whole thing rather interesting. My oldest son and my daughter are very gifted in the arts (music, drawing). My right handed son can not draw to save his life but can visualize anything.

OK, ADHD son is right handed…ADHD first ex-husband is right handed…ADHD current about to be ex-husband is left handed. This is 33% just in my family. I will check my 4th grade inclusion class tomorrow and see what the ratio is and report back.

Umm… I’m ADD and sinister, my brother is sinister and unaffected. My right-handed son is more affected than any of us, as are his right-handed male cousin and left-handed female cousin.

I lean to the former suggestion that L-Handed-ness is another aggravation and a distraction, not really a cause.

I don’t think there is a left handed gene. I have heard that left handedness is a reasult of fetal brain damage.

OK maybe I have ADHD too. I forgot to post my info that I promised. Out of 40 students in 2 inclusion 4th grade classes, 5 have ADHD, and none are lefties. I guess that kind of shoots the theory in the foot.

I am ADD and a lefty. I think it seems that more lefties are ADD cause we stick out anyway. I mean ur tryin to concentrate so hard and then that stupid door opens the wrong way and its just one more thing to aggravate and make you stand out more
