Questions about Adderal

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My 9 year old ADHD son was suspended until after the Christmas break from his after school group for getting into a fight. He is on only 20 mg of Adderal XR and it starts to wear off around 3:00 p.m. Needless to say, I am going to talk with another doctor about other alernatives.

I seem to notice with my son that he becomes defiant, aggressive, and angry when coming down from the meds. Anyone else notice this?

I am interested in trying Strattera.

Interested in hearing if anyone else has this problem with Adderal.

This a very common occurence with stimulant medications. You might try adding 5 mg of regular adderall a little before the time when it seems the XR is wearing off. You could also try giving him something with caffeine in it, such as a mountain dew. Some kids also need something to eat when the meds are wearing off, especially something with some protein in it. Strattera does not give this rebound effect, so it might be a good choice if the XR is not working well. Or you could try a different stimulant — what stimulant works best is very child-specific.

My son (12.5 yrs) was also on Adderall, the XR version, which was a big improvement over regular short-acting Adderall, but he had no appetite, and lost 5 pounds in one year, despite growing several inches,

just converted over to Strattera at the beg of January and the differences are dramatic, the day we stopped the adderall xr, his appetite increase dramatically,

the strattera seems to work almost continuously, the mornings are no longer a huge chore and something to be feared, but almost pleasant most days.

A note, our doctor did a slow conversion, since strattera takes up to 6 weeks to become fully functional, we took 50 mg adderall xr and 25 mg strattera for a week and then 50 mg adderall xr and 40 mg strattera for 3 weeks and then 40 mg strattera, I’ve read on other bulletin boards people nto having success with strattera, but it seems their doctors just cut off the stimulant without letter strattera build up in the system.

In my 11yr. olds instance. He was on Adderall XR (20mg) in morn.,but it seemed to wear off around lunchtime at school. He was then placed on Strattera, which I was really hoping would work. Even though Straterra works wonderfully on some people, with my son, he started having terrible mood swings. At times, he would walk out of a room happy as can be, walk back in, and start yelling at you. When I advised the dr. of this, she abruptly stopped the Strattera. Read up on the literature! Dr. informed me, it can cause neurological problems in some patients.
My son is now on Adderall 25mg in morn, and takes a 10mg at school. We discontinued the XR, because some kids tolerate the immediate release better than the extended release. Good luck!

If you want to know more about strattera go to: http://millermom.proboards23.com .

Strattera is a weight dependent medication,
it takes time to build up,
initial side effects can be counteracted by giving with food and giving at night during ramp up.
If on too high or too low a dose, you can have mood issues.

When it works, it is wonderful.

Read up on it and educate yourself on it so that you can avoid the pitfalls and failures.

My son is doing great on Strattera.
